Making Sense How Greenhouse Gases Work

Greenhouse gases emission has become a global issues. These gases, specifically carbon dioxide, has played its part in heating up world’s temperature and exacerbate climate change.


So what is actually greenhouse gases? 


Greenhouse gases is the release of certain gases to the atmosphere, that are able to retain the heat from the sun and subsequently contribute to global warming. The most renowned among these gases include carbon dioxide, methane, dinitrogen oxide, and fluorinated gases. These gases are mainly produced from human activities, such as fossil fuel combustion for energy, industry process, transportation, as well as deforestation. These greenhouse gases eventually contribute to climate change, in addition to other environmental and health issues. 


Primarily, these gases acts in natural process that capture sun energy, keeping the earth warm and sustaining the life process within it. Problem arise when human has produced excessive greenhouse gases, which in turn create numerous environmental problems.


In addition to the combustion of fossil fuel that accounts for the increased of greenhouse gases in atmosphere for the last 150 years, other factors such as land grazing and agricultural activities play its significant part in increasing greenhouse gases emission.


The amount of CO2 in the atmosphere has soared (appr. 80%) between the year 1970 and 2004. This is above the natural estimate of CO2 seen in the last 650 thousand years. It is worth to be noted that despite the event of COVID-19 that managed to halt world activities for a year, the emission has currently returned to the rate seen before the pandemic. 

The high concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere has inevitably caused negative impacts to the environment. One could see or experience extreme events such as the rise of sea level, the increased intensity and frequency of heatwaves, drought, as well as other extreme climate events. Other notable impacts caused by excessive level of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere includes the melting of ice in the poles, acidification of sea, and the loss of coral reefs. While not exactly affecting human, these events manage to destabilize climate system.


In conclusion, it is true that greenhouse gases has an essential role in regulating earth’s temperature. Unfortunately, the increased amount of these gases in the atmosphere has created negative impacts on climate. It is therefore important that international community has been taking strategic steps to address this challenge. In addition to government, private sector and communities should play their own role in decreasing greenhouse gases and promoting a sustainable future.
