As part of the partnership with Indonesia Indah Foundation (IIF), CarbonX planted thousands of mangrove seedlings in Brebes, Central Java. To complement the environmental education program already provided by the IIF in class, the event also brought some students and teachers to join the activity. The environmental education program, known as Saya Pahlawan Lingkungan or “I am an Environmental Hero”, is currently running at 35 national schools in the Greater Jakarta area.
In addition to curbing emissions, the planted mangroves are projected to play a significant role in curbing coast abrasion and tidal flood impacts. The mangrove area in Brebes has been chosen as planting sites due to its success story. Initiated by a local grassroots movement, years of mangrove planting along Brebes’ coast sends a strong message about how a collaboration between parties may result in an improved livelihood and sustainable environment. The mangrove area now provides economic opportunities for silvofisheries and ecotourism-related businesses, while people could still reap the ecological benefit from planted forest.
That said, recent events of tidal floods that caused extensive material loss to local communities highlight the importance of amplifying both climate mitigation and adaptation actions.
CarbonX’s contribution to plant 3,000 seeds of Rhizopora mucronata, a mangrove species common to the land, signifies the token of our ambition to accomplish the aforementioned target and in becoming the driving force in the transition towards a sustainable future. Though small compared to the scale of the challenge faced by local communities, we expect this action could become a call for other entities to be involved. By working together, we are confident that we can triumph to achieve a sustainable future.
